Q1 Newsletter

I can’t believe 2019 is already here! Thank you so much for making 2018 such a success for JN Photography. As soon as we get all the 2018 orders finished we’ll launch the 2018 Photo of the Year competition. This is how it will work, four photographs from 2018 will be chosen and put up on Facebook and Instagram for a vote. The photo with the most votes wins! And what does the photo winner get? A $20 JN Photography discount on their next portrait session plus a framed 16×20 print of the winning photo!

Since you’ve made JNP so successful in 2018 we’re changing a few things. We’ll no longer be sending out three of the quarterly newsletters (such as this one) via USPS. Thankfully our customer and mailing list has gotten too large to support the postage cost (not to mention all the time it takes to put that stuff together). So which newsletter will get sent out? The Q4 that goes out in October. Why? Because we’re going to give you a chance to get in on the Christmas Special throughout October and November! So what about the quarterly coupons? They’re attached only to the emailed newsletters as a PDF file. Interested in what’s coming up for the monthly specials? They’re on the PDF too so you can plan ahead. Not signed up for the mailing list or need to change something? You can sign up at https://www.jnphotographyva.com/newsletter-mailing-list.

How about this: no more late fees and no taxes in 2019! That’s right, we’ve tossed out the late fees in our contracts and we won’t be collecting sales tax in Virginia. There is a catch, we need help covering the cost of electronic payments such as PayPal and credit cards. To offset that expense we’re including a 2.9% “convenience” fee, but only to customers who choose to pay electronically. Cash and check are still good with us.

So with all those changes to our services we’ve decided to shape up a couple things. Now the contracts will be easier to read and you can see how much additional photographs are – just in case you can’t get enough. Another thing that’s being shaped up: Print Packages. We’ve narrowed down our Print Packages to something simpler: Small, Medium, Large, and Big. And now the Print Packages start at just $11.41!

Our JNP Models are getting more services in 2019 too. We hereby dub every second Monday as Model Monday. We’ll be sending models hints, tips, videos, book ideas, and more to help them in their career. Plus, that week one JNP Model will be featured on Facebook, Instagram, etc. And we’re accepting new model applications throughout 2019! To sign up go to https://www.jnphotographyva.com/product/become-a-model/.

The Elon Tornado Album is still in the works and will hopefully be finished up in 2019 after we finish the 2018 photographs. All JNP customers will receive a discounted price and all profits will go towards God’s Pit Crew. Check them out at www.godspitcrew.org.

2018 Q3 Newletter

*Editor’s Note: Our mailed version of the Quarterly Newsletters contains special coupons only available to those on our mailing list. To be added to the mailing list fill out the form on the side.

This Q3 Newsletter has been a long time coming, but I am happy to announce that we have some HUGE things going on at JN Photography. First off, we’ve moved the studio to Campbell County, our baby Caleb was born healthy and strong, and we’re celebrating with our biggest sale ever: Buy One Get One on all new full photography session contracts and media conversions, $200 extra off new wedding package contracts, and a free 5×7 print with every mini session contracted. Sale ends August 31, 2018 so make sure you schedule your next session now to save big.

The next huge thing we’ve done is extended our Mini Session services. These sessions are much shorter than full sessions and start at just $40. The mini-lineup includes Family Portraits, Family Reunions, Maternity, Newborn, Portraits, Senior Pictures, and Parties.

Now the most important part of this newsletter. We’ve been in contact with Make-A-Wish foundation and I am so very happy to announce that we now photograph for Make-A-Wish Greater Virginia! This non-profit entity touches children who are suffering life-threatening illnesses by giving them a wish come true. Say for instance, a boy wants to meet Batman or an NFL team, or a girl wants to be a Disney princess or wants to redesign the pediatric floor at the hospital, Make-A-Wish makes that happen and JN Photography makes it forever.

It’s crazy how God is blessing people through JN Photography. Thanks to your support we’ve not only partnered with the Greater Virginia chapter of Make-A-Wish, but we’re also supporting important charities and organizations such as the Wounded Warrior Project, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and the Lynchburg Humane Society. Plus, we’re able to donate wedding photography to couples fighting terminal and life threatening illnesses. It puts a smile on my face knowing that each photo helps so many lives.

Because God is using JN Photography in such a powerful way, we’ve extended our Referral Program. Now you get $100 off for each person you refer to us (of course they actually have to use us too). That means if you refer just eight people or families to us you can have your wedding photography at little or no cost!

On a side note, we’ve received several hundred photographs of the effects of the Elon Tornado. I was able to meet with my friend Gary who literally sat in his basement as the tornado ripped his house from the foundation. We’re not taking time off working on your photographs, so filtering through the several hundred pictures is taking time, but when we’re finished we’ll compile an album that will be sold for charity.

And without further ado, I’d like to officially announce the winner of the 2017 Photograph of the Year. The award and the $25 JNP Gift Card goes to the family of this beautiful photograph! Congrats Amy!

Growing Fall

It’s not often that a photographer is privileged to meet a natural model, much less a natural model who loves modeling. Yet such is the case with Savannah. I first met her in 2016 and her modeling skills for such a young girl were impressive. Her enthusiasm obvious. But in November of 2017 I saw that she not only had a desire to model, but had been practicing hard in posing and taking care of her body by eating the right things. She truly has a local talent that has the potential for professionalism.

Now these photos may look warm and welcoming, but the wind was howling and the cold was biting. This poor girl was freezing by the time we finished outdoors. We were having fun though, albeit some of the fun was watching her mom chase after the reflector disc. But these beautiful photographs would have been absolutely impossible without the mom’s disc work – we owe her!

So without further ado here is a sample of the last 2017 album. We’ve already finished the December albums and have uploaded a selection, though we’ll probably be rearranging them for easier viewing. Now JN Photography will review them and choose one 2017 Photograph of the Year!

Realty Portrait

Nannette Turner is a realtor with Lynchburg’s Keller-Williams. I had called KW just days before another realtor was supposed to come to the old house with a photographer and with the dreaded paperwork. People kept telling me that I needed to double check on that realtor’s numbers, so I called KW on the spur of a moment. Nannette came over a couple days after the phone call and I’m grateful she did. Needless to say her numbers and presentation were on point and blew the other realtor out of the water – we signed her on that night. The next day the house sold with a dream-like offer that was perfect. The next week, the house that had everything we wanted – including a new studio space – was put on the market. Nannette got us in for a short-notice showing, we put in our offer immediately, and I’m happy to say we’ll be moving in soon.

Nannette then asked if I would do a head portrait session with her and her partner. Of course I said yes and, after all that my family was blessed with through her, I gave her a pretty good deal too. We worked hard on the session, went into overtime, and the result was 53 renditions of fifteen specific portraits. Additionally, her KW colleagues now receive a special JN Photography rate.

It should be obvious that I highly recommend Nannette and TJ with McLean Mortgage. For inspections I recommend Anthony Vorce with James River Home Inspections – those guys are hard workers! And if your business, however large or small, doesn’t have a JN Photography contract that locks-in special photography rates – well call now! I’d be happy to speak with you and provide your company’s portrait and advert photography needs. 434-944-6982. If you don’t have time to call email me at admin@jnphotographyva.com .

The Chargeable Viking Bronco Christmas Spectacular

[carousel_slide id=’1813′]

I just finished a session for future Christmas cards when one of the subjects told me that he was surprising his brother by basically changing his flight so he’d come to Virginia instead of his original destination for Christmas. Now all they needed was a photographer for the special, surprise Christmas reunion. I was already scheduled to work a ton that weekend, but I couldn’t resist this special occasion. So, another 16 hour day was scheduled and I’m so glad we did!

The energy, laughs, and jokes were contagious. Everybody was energetic and positive, thankful to be together for the holidays. And thankful that they would have photographs to cherish this special day for generations to come.

Of course the main attraction was the baby – and boy what a poser! Such a heart melter. But he wasn’t the only one ready to take the spotlight. Grandpa brought his strongest player a new Vikings hat – a Christmas present to chagrin of the kiddo’s Bronco daddy and Charger uncle. And the sparks flew! But of course, with the power of the littlest player, the Vikings won the show. Being a Cheesehead myself, that absolutely killed me, but who could say no to that little face!

There were so many great memories this last Christmas. And this shoot definitely has a lot of them.

Calling Family of Six!

Back in November 2017 I had the privilege of conducting a very special family portrait session at Riverside Park in Lynchburg Virginia. I think it was in 2016 when I had the opportunity of donating to one of the local churches in Lynchburg. They were holding a silent auction and I threw in a $560 gift voucher. Over a year passed and I truly thought that the gift voucher had been lost for all time. Then, just days before the voucher expired, Rebecca contacted me. The winner of the voucher had not the time to use it, so he blessed the family of six. Needless to say, kids are expensive and having four kids is quadruply expensive!

We love to get involved in charities. To apply, click here.

Our first obstacle was timing. Every parent of young children know there are certain times you do and do not take your kids out or do a special event. We decided that an evening session would be the best and the place – well what better place is there to do an outdoor session with a bunch of young kids then in a park? So we went with Riverside Park since it has the beautiful scenery and the playground. This way the kids could play before the session and get the energy out, or the parents could hold the playground captive as a treat for good behavior. The latter worked excellently and the little darlings did a great job following instruction and having their portraits taken.

Afterwards I captured them playing on the playground – some treasured memories for sure. I’m working on making the JN Photography albums available through our website, but that is taking some time to compress them and arrange them (trust me, you don’t want to load a photograph that’s over 34 megabytes). So for right now they’re in a temporary folder on our Facebook page. Click here to view them. Like with all our clients, this album will be moved into the year’s sampler page after a while.

Oh, and JN Photography is throwing a HUGE Valentine sweepstakes! One grand prize winner and three runner-ups will receive a lot of cool wedding photography sessions.

Pillow Maternity

Soft Focus Maternity

A very happy couple privileged me to chronicle a surprise maternity session in November 2017 and it was a lot of fun. The whole family bore the cold and took some fun photographs. This was a shoot I was super excited about because this couple has done so much for the Lynchburg community.

For this particular session I left the Canon 6D Mark II on Portrait Setting (manual of course) for that special, soft focus feel.  Now, usually I’m not a big fan of soft focus, but sometimes it creates a truly magical feeling like with bridal sessions. You can reserve your bridal session for free at JN Photography’s bridal page: https://www.jnphotographyva.com/product/bridal/ . So what do I prefer over soft focus? Detailed photographs. Not necessarily rigid like with some bodyscape, but detailed none the less – especially with the eyes. Specific eye focus is not something the Canon 6D Mark II can do with a group photograph with a Portrait Setting, after all, the setting is designed to soften skin pores on close-ups and that’s what makes the soft focus atmosphere at farther distances. So I really had to practice some self-control and venture into what I don’t normally do. The results were pleasant.

Most of you know that I usually bring all of my equipment, even the stuff we won’t need. This time was an exception. I did not bring my portable studio and you know what? We continued the adventure indoors for a few special photographs on the spur of the moment. It was a lot of fun trying to piece together the lighting in a small dining room. Getting people in place, object moved, and the single Canon 600EX II-RT was a lot of crunching on the spot, but the results were great as you and several hundred people have now seen through Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest. So thank you all so much for letting me know how much you enjoyed this maternity session! Feel free to reach me at any time if you have a cool idea. Who knows – if it’s unique enough I might do it for free.
